The test helps determine the water quality and the need for treatments like chemical inhibitors, power flushing, or filters to maintain optimal system performance and prevent costly breakdowns.

 

  • Scale acts as an insulator, making the boiler less efficient at transferring heat. This forces the system to use more fuel to reach the desired temperature.

What does turbidity mean in a heating system?

Turbidity refers to the cloudiness or opacity of your system water. It is caused by thousands of microscopic particles of suspended rust, sludge, and debris floating through the pipes.

Why is my heating system water dark brown or black?

.Dark water indicates extremely high turbidity, almost always caused by dissolved magnetite (iron oxide). This means the inside of your radiators is actively rusting away and turning into a thick sludge.

How does high turbidity damage my boiler?

Thick, turbid water struggles to absorb and transfer heat efficiently. It forces the central heating pump to work harder, eventually causing it to burn out, and it blocks the narrow channels inside the boiler's heat exchanger.

Can high turbidity be fixed without a full power flush?

If caught early, minor turbidity can sometimes be cleared by carrying out a basic flush, installing a magnetic filter and using chemical cleaners. However, heavily turbid, pitch-black water usually requires a professional mechanical flush to remove the heavy deposits.

How does the test kit measure turbidity levels?
